Polydactyly has been described in two breeds of domestic cats, the Maine Coon and Pixiebob, and in some outbred domestic cats. In most cases, Maine Coons have preaxial polydatilya. Among polydactic cats, there are “right” and “wrong” ones. The irregular form of polydactyly, which leads to the appearance of the Hw allele, is expressed by underdeveloped fingers and bones in particular, which can provoke curvature of the bones of the forearm. * * In English literature, this polydactyly is called Mitten-paw. Three identified alleles associated with polydactyly are located in the regulatory region of the SHH gene involved in limb development - ZRS (zone of regulatory sequence of polarizing activity), which, in turn, is located within the 5th intron of the LMBR1 gene. 2 alleles have been found in outbred domestic cats in the UK (UK1 and UK2 alleles), and the third (Hw) in Hemingway cats and Maine Coons (populations in France, Germany, Denmark, Canada and the USA). However, not all polydactyl Maine Coon cats carry the Hw allele (for example, the Canadian line), which means that there are additional mutations leading to polydactyly that have not yet been studied.
