Description

The allele e ^H is responsible for the sable (red) color in English and American Cocker Spaniels.

Dominance order of allele E ^H at locus E: E ^M> E ^G> E> e^H > e ^A> e1–3

In dogs homozygous for this allele, or carrying the second allele, allele "e", the synthesis of eumelanin is partially suppressed, therefore, the color is visually visible as a dark brown.

In some cases, you can observe a gradual transition of colors from golden to brown shades on the head and back of the dog.
