The disease is characterized by insufficient mineralization of the teeth. It arises due to the c.899C> T point mutation of the FAM20C gene for a protein that binds calcium and phosphorylates proteins involved in the mineralization of bones and teeth. Clinically manifested by excessive tooth abrasion, the appearance of cracks in the tooth enamel, the appearance of dark spots and other uncharacteristic pigmentation of the teeth, which can lead to acute and chronic inflammation, both in the tooth tissues and in the surrounding tissues, and tooth loss. Histological analysis of dogs suffering from this disease shows that an abnormal dentin structure is formed, the tooth enamel may be hypoplastic.
