Hereditary diseases

Description
Hypocatalasia is a disease associated with a deficiency in the activity of the enzyme catalase in erythrocytes. Lack of catalase in mammals leads to a decrease in the rate of decomposition of peroxides formed in the body, and, as a result, to premature aging, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, kidney disease, tumor formation, infertility and hair graying.

Affected dogs are at increased risk of developing open mouth ulcers, which can progress to progressive gangrene. Possibly asymptomatic course of the disease.

Catalase deficiency is associated with a single nucleotide substitution c.979G> A in the CAT gene (p.Ala327Thr), which leads to thermal instability of the mutant enzyme. Catalase in sick dogs degrades 8 times faster than in healthy dogs, which leads to a decrease in enzyme activity to zero.

The same mutation was found in the American Foxhound during the screening process.

Autosomal recessive type of inheritance (but according to some sources, heterozygotes can also manifest the disease).
