Hereditary diseases
An autosomal recessive inflammatory disease that occurs in puppies by two months of age. Leads to the formation of severe ulcers on the mucous membranes of the mouth, eyes and respiratory tract, leading to pain and discharge from the eyes and nose. Affected dogs often have increased breath sounds due to inflammation of the larynx and trachea. There are enlarged lymph nodes, an increased number of white blood cells, protein in the urine, and a lack of protein in the blood. Severe chronic inflammatory changes in the lining of the chest and abdomen may develop. Newborn dogs may have a cerebellar malformation. Affected dogs usually die or are euthanized before reaching adulthood due to the severity of the disease and quality of life issues.
