Hereditary diseases
An autosomal recessive disorder that results in abnormal development of the spinal cord. Clinical signs range from mild to severe, depending on the extent and location of spinal cord defects. The disease usually manifests between 4 and 6 weeks of age with a characteristic rabbit-like gait, crouching, wide stance, and abnormal reflexes in the hindquarters. In some cases, there may be abnormal hair growth along the back, curvature of the spine, deformity of the sternum, and a curled tail. X-rays and analysis of cerebrospinal fluid can be used to diagnose affected dogs. Clinical signs of the disease do not progress with age.
