Description
Hereditary disease caused by a deficiency of the enzyme galactocerebrosidase (GALC). As a result, the myelin of nerve cells accumulates the precursor of galactocerebroside - psychosine, which causes the breakdown of the myelin fiber with the formation of characteristic inclusions - globoid cells.
Symptoms
The first symptoms appear in the first months of life and progress rapidly. The first symptoms include tremors, urinary incontinence, limb weakness, and gusty movements. Over time, the disease progresses from reduced muscle tone to loss of reflexes and paralysis. Due to the lack of appropriate therapy, animals are euthanized 2-6 months after the onset of signs of disease.
