Hereditary diseases

Description
Pyruvate kinase is one of the key enzymes in red blood cells, a deficiency of which can lead to anemia and death in dogs under five years of age. With an insufficient amount of the enzyme in the body, the life span of red blood cells is significantly reduced, and, therefore, their number in the bloodstream decreases.

Symptoms
The main symptoms are: decreased physical activity of the animal, decreased appetite, pale mucous membranes, weight loss, growth retardation and heart murmurs. The accumulated iron, which is released from red blood cells as a result of their destruction, also damages the liver and bone marrow, leading to liver failure and the formation of abnormally dense bone tissue.
