Hereditary diseases

Description
Hereditary footpad hyperkeratosis (HFH) is a congenital skin disorder that occurs in the Cromforlander and Irish Terrier. This disease is characterized by tough, thickened and cracked paw pads and an irregular coat. Hereditary paw pad hyperkeratosis is inherited in an autosomal recessive manner.

Symptoms
Hereditary hyperkeratosis of the paw pads is a progressive disease that manifests itself as an unnecessarily thick stratum corneum and subsequent painful cracks, secondary infections and, accordingly, lameness. Calluses can be seen on all paw pads. Affected dogs often refuse to walk on uneven surfaces. Symptoms result from abnormal keratinization and proliferation of skin cells. Typical signs of hereditary hyperkeratosis of the paw pads are observed on all limbs at the age of 4-5 months. Other characteristic features are very hard, fast-growing nails and a dull and less coarse coat. Dogs suffering from hereditary hyperkeratosis have a normal lifespan if they receive proper care of their paw pads and nails.
