Hereditary diseases

Description
The disease is characterized by the slowly progressive formation of many fluid-filled cysts in the ducts of both kidneys. Cysts range in size from 0.5 mm to 2.5 cm. Cysts can grow significantly, replacing the surrounding kidney tissue and lead to renal failure. Affected dogs are also at increased risk of developing mitral valve dysplasia. Cysts can also develop in the bile ducts. The development of the disease begins in puppies under 6 months of age, but can be extremely difficult to diagnose in the early stages. In some cases, the disease may become stable and not progress. However, in most cases, dogs with a hereditary form of polycystic kidney disease die early enough (at the age of 3-6 years) due to acute renal failure.

Currently, effective treatment methods are not described, surgical intervention is not effective. Animals with even one mutant gene should be excluded from breeding.

Symptoms
In the early stages, the disease does not manifest itself, then the sick dog has excessive water intake, decreased appetite, weight loss, frequent and uncontrolled urination, vomiting, depression. Symptoms develop gradually.

Diagnostics
Ultrasound diagnostics of the kidneys at the age of 6-12 months is effective, in sick animals it is also advisable to perform echocardiography (ultrasound of the heart) due to the risk of mitral valve dysplasia. Characteristic changes in the behavior and physiology of the dog.
