Description
Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), a group of inherited eye diseases that affects many breeds of dogs, is characterized by the gradual destruction of photoreceptors, rods and cones, which first leads to night blindness and tunnel syndrome, and then complete loss of vision. The first changes in the retina, consisting in degenerative changes in cone-shaped cells, appear in the first days of a puppy's life, then the changes affect rod-shaped cells. The disease progresses rapidly, sometimes depriving the dog of sight by the end of the first year of life.
