Curly hair has a character of incomplete dominance - only one copy of the CU1 allele is required for the formation of curly hair. However, due to incomplete dominance, dogs with only one copy of the CU1 allele (CU1 / cu1) may have wavy or moderately frizzy coats. Dogs with genotype cu1 / cu1 will have a straight coat, dogs with genotype CU1 / CU1 will usually have a very curly coat. CU2 mutation analysis is required in the Curly Coated Retriever.
