Hereditary diseases

Description
A rare hereditary condition that affects the perception of pain. This disorder belongs to the group of autosomal recessive sensory neuropathies and causes dogs to mutilate their own limbs through excessive grooming, licking and biting.

AMS causes progressive degeneration and abnormal development of neurons in the spinal cord and peripheral nerves, resulting in loss of pain in the extremities. Sick puppies tend to be smaller than healthy ones. Symptoms appear between 2 and 12 months of age. Dogs can become so insensitive that they gnaw on their own claws and paw pads. The syndrome can be mild, manifested only in a lack of sensitivity to pain, without a tendency to self-mutilation, which makes it extremely difficult to make a diagnosis. Cider is caused by a mutation in the regulatory part of the GDNF gene (chr4.g.70,875,561C> T), which leads to a decrease in the amount of its product, the glial cellular neurotrophic factor. It is a small enzyme that actively promotes axonal development and the survival of many types of neurons. The cause of the disease is a single nucleotide substitution g.70,875,561C> T in the GDNF gene (glial cell derived neurotrophic factor).
