Hereditary diseases

Description
Macrothrombocytopenia is a disease associated with an increase in the size of platelets and a decrease in their content in the blood. The platelet count is reduced to 100,000-50,000 per microliter. The macrothrombocytes characteristic of this disease function normally, and homozygotes for the mutation do not have health problems associated with changes in the size and number of platelets, but it is necessary to distinguish hereditary macrothrombocytopenia from acquired, caused by infections, medication, or immune reactions. This will avoid unnecessary medication use.

An autosomal recessive mode of inheritance is shown for Cairn Terriers and Norfolk Terriers. Macrothrombocytopenia in other breeds may have other forms of inheritance.
