The mutation results in cobalamin malabsorption and low serum cobalamin levels, hyperhomocysteinemia, and methylmalonic aciduria. Clinical manifestations are observed by the year: diarrhea, lack of appetite, poor body condition and developmental delay, macrocytosis and neutropenia may develop. Beagles with cobalamin deficiency develop degenerative liver disease. Clinical recovery can be achieved with regular parenteral cobalamin supplementation.
