Hereditary diseases

Description
The disease is characterized by impaired renal function.

Affected males show symptoms early, usually around 2–3 months of age. There is a decrease in the growth rate, the dog gradually loses weight and emaciates. Other symptoms: excessive drinking and urination, vomiting, poor appetite, muscle weakness, anemia, rapidly progressive renal failure. As a result of malfunctioning kidneys in sick dogs, proteinuria (protein in the urine), hematuria (blood in the urine) and azotemia (high levels of nitrogen-containing compounds in the blood) are recorded. Males rarely live up to one and a half years. Carrier bitches also show symptoms, but are less life-threatening and often do well up to 5 years of age. With age, about 31% of them develop moderate renal failure, and 38% severe. A similar condition in humans is called Alport syndrome.
